Health and Nutrition Week at NPS OMR
Good nutrition is the foundation of a healthy, active, and successful life, and there’s no better way to teach that lesson than by making it fun. From 31st August to 4th September 2026, students from Pre-Primary to Grade 8 at NPS OMR came together to celebrate National Nutrition Week through a vibrant, week-long initiative: “Eat the Rainbow – Our Colourful Nutrition Week.”
Why We Celebrate Health and Nutrition Week
School Health and Nutrition Week is an annual awareness campaign observed to promote healthy eating, regular physical activity, and overall wellness among students, staff, and families. Its purpose goes far beyond a single week of activities. It is about building habits that last a lifetime.
This year’s core objective was simple but powerful: to help children understand the value of balanced meals, local whole foods, and limiting processed sugars. As the saying goes, small changes in the lunch box today can prevent big health challenges tomorrow.
A Plate Full of Colour
Throughout the week, children were encouraged to bring colourful fruits and vegetables to school in their snack boxes, with a different colour taking centre stage each day. Juicy red watermelon and pomegranate, crisp green cucumber, sunny yellow bananas, bright orange papaya, and vibrant violet, pink, and blue foods all found their way onto lunch trays and into curious young hands.
For many children, it was their first real introduction to the idea that nature colour-codes its nutrition. Each hue on the plate signalled a different set of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and the students loved discovering that a colourful plate really does mean a healthier body.
Learning Through Fun
What made the week so effective was how naturally it blended learning with enjoyment. Rather than simply being told to “eat healthy,” children experienced it by comparing snack boxes, spotting new fruits and vegetables, and connecting colours to the nutrients hidden inside them. They came away understanding that different coloured foods support different aspects of growth, immunity, and overall well-being, from stronger bones to sharper eyesight to better resistance against illness.
The Bigger Picture
Health and Nutrition Week reinforces an idea every educator knows well: academic success depends heavily on physical and mental well-being. A child who eats well, stays active, and feels good in their body is better equipped to focus, learn, and thrive in the classroom.
By embedding sustainable health habits early, one colourful lunch box at a time, NPS OMR continues to lay the foundation for lifelong healthy choices, helping our students grow into individuals who are not only academically strong but also healthy, active, and well-rounded.
