Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration at NPS OMR
Ganesh Chaturthi at NPS OMR, Old Madras Road, was in full swing, and the students were right in the middle of it. The day started with idol-making, and honestly, that’s where you could see the most concentration on their faces all week.
Each child got a lump of clay and turned it into their own version of Ganesha. Teachers and mentors helped them. Some were neat and symmetrical, others a little lopsided and all the more charming for it. It’s the kind of activity that looks simple but actually asks a lot of a child: patience, steady hands, and the willingness to keep going even when the trunk doesn’t quite come out right the first time.
From there, things moved to the stage, where a group of students performed a skit on the story of Lord Ganesha. Then came the part with all the devotional songs and energetic dances. By the end, the kids were grinning through their steps, and the confidence they walked off stage with is something no classroom lesson quite teaches.
What we loved most about the day wasn’t any single performance — it was watching the students take ownership of the whole thing. They weren’t sitting through a celebration someone else had put together for them; they were the ones shaping their clay, saying their lines, and dancing their steps, with teachers mostly stepping back and letting them lead.
That’s really what these celebrations are for: giving children a hands-on way to connect with a festival they’ve grown up hearing about, rather than just reading about it in a book. This Ganesh Chaturthi did exactly that, and judging by the laughter in the hallways afterward, the kids had a wonderful time doing it.
