Field Trip to the Institute of Baking Technology and Value Addition
Grade 6 students stepped inside a working Institute of Baking Technology and Value Addition, watching everyday ingredients transform into bread and baked goods through a process that blends science, precision, and teamwork.
The tour followed the entire baking journey, starting with raw ingredients like flour, yeast, water, and sugar, and ending with trays of finished bread and pastries ready for packaging. Staff explained each stage in simple terms, helping students connect what looked like a large, industrial process to the same basic principles used in home baking.
Students observed each stage of production up close:
- Dough mixing and kneading, done at a scale far larger than any small-batch demonstration
- Fermentation in action, watching dough rise as yeast released carbon dioxide
- Industrial ovens, and how temperature and timing affect texture and colour
- Packaging and hygiene protocols, including how factories maintain food safety at scale
- Quality checks, where staff explained how each batch is tested before it reaches shelves
For many students, the most memorable part of the visit was understanding why dough rises. Seeing yeast, a living microorganism, actively produce gas bubbles that make bread light and airy gave real meaning to biology lessons on microorganisms and fermentation. It is one thing to read about yeast in a textbook, and another to watch it transform a dense lump of dough into a fluffy loaf.
The trip also introduced students to concepts they rarely encounter directly: hygiene standards, quality control, and the logistics of food safety. Watching staff follow strict protocols such as hairnets and sanitised equipment, it checks a kitchen shelf.
